Shepparton is one of two trial sites selected for a new Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission initiative: Report Racism.
This project encourages people to report racism against members of our Aboriginal community. Reports can be lodged online or via the following organisations: Rumbalara, the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, the Regional Aboriginal Justice Advisory Council, Shepparton Police or the Commission.
Report Racism aims to create an environment in which people feel comfortable reporting racism they experience or witness (including racial discrimination and vilification and racist behaviour by Victoria Police members). It provides a safe and confidential way to report racist behaviour.
Report Racism is also being trialled in the City of Yarra, Darebin and Whittlesea. The Shepparton trial will run for 6-12 months.
This project coincides with a campaign being run by Beyond Blue, which highlights the impact of racism on people’s wellbeing: Stop Think Respect asks people to stop and think about their behaviour and how it affects others, and to be guided by respect. The campaign features a powerful video that demonstrates the subtle, almost invisible ways in which Aboriginal people suffer from racial discrimination. If you are on Twitter, you can follow this campaign via #StopThinkRespect or check out their video below.
